Engaging moving threats

Engaging moving targets, an essential part of Dynamic Marksmanship

I just wanted to talk a little more about engaging moving targets, and give some ideas on how to make moving targets that you can do yourself.

The first idea is to string a cable or good rope between two trees that have a safe impact area behind them. Take your cable or rope and tie one end of it about 8-10 feet above the ground, then take place a simple pulley on the cable. Go over to your other tree and tie this end of the cable about 3 feet off the ground.

Then you can attach a target to the pulley. Then attach a rope, string or such (550 cord works well) to the cable on the low side of the pulley in such a way that when you pull on the cord it comes off the cable, thus releasing the pulley to begin it's decent to the other tree.

Take the cord out to about 100 yards (or whatever distance you can muster) and use that as your beginning shooting position.

From that point you can pull the cord, releasing the target, as the target moves you practice engaging it until you have that method down. Then try it standing to start, pull the cord, then drop to another shooting position, practice until you master all shooting positions.

Then move on to more dynamic engagements. Pull the cord, then run up to another shooting position and engage the target using all shooting positions.

You can get as advanced as you want. You can pull the cord then engage the target as you are moving towards it, away from it, sideways both directions, and any other way you can think of. The more you practice the better off you will be in any situation.

You can also practice using your primary or your secondary, or a combination of both.
